Burning Coal Vein
Burning Coal Vein is a badlands landscape still in the making. Located 15 miles west and north of Amidon, the fire smoldering in the coal layer several feet underground was burning when viewed by the first white settlers in th area over a hundred years ago. Burning Coal Vein has since become part of the Little Missouri National Grasslands natural area with adjoing campground. The underground fire is no longer active, but local landscape features and columnar Rocky Mountain juniper (cedar) bear witness to the effects of the continous smoke of past years.

Custer Trail Auto Tour
Gold rushes, homesteads, and railroads, setting the stage for conflict. The auto tour is divided into two segments that provide access to portions of Sully's Battle of the Badlands Trail and Custer Historic Trail. The entire tour (approximately 80 miles) can be driven in a single day, but plan on taking 2-3 days, enjoying the area. It's easy to get lost in the Badlands, so watch for directional signs that will keep you on track.

Killdeer Mountain Four Bears Scenic Byway
Beginning north of Manning, ND, to Highway 22 through Killdeer to Highway 23, then east of New Town, ND. From the Killdeer Mountains to the deeply entrenched Little Missouri River Breaks and Badlands, this byway provides a unique and enchanting landscape in one of the most scenic areas of western North Dakota. The rich culture and history of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara tribes paired with the recreation opportunities of the Little Missouri State Park provide visitors an enthralling adventure in western North Dakota.

Old Red Old Ten Scenic Byway
From Mandan to Dickinson, beyond the rolling hills, the buttes, the scoria bluffs and beautiful towns, history is what makes the Old Red Old Ten Scenic Byway come alive. The Fort Keogh Trail, the Custer Trail, the Old Red Trail, Highway 23 and finally USHighway 10 are all part of this 100 mile stretch of road. All of this takes place within just a few miles of Interstate 94. Take in the breathtaking vistas, enjoy the variety of wildlife and participate in a wide variety of events and activities that make up the Old Red Old Ten Scenic Byway.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park
This scenic 36 mile paved loop throughout the South Unit of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park offers interpretive signs that explain the portions of the park's historical and natural phenomena. The south unit of the park features more than 80 miles of marked trails, plus countless unmarked trails. Soaring buttes, rolling grasslands and challenging downhills overlook prehistoric river beds dotted with wildflowers and stunning landscapes.

Badlands Activities Center

Keeping in mind the needs of the Dickinson community and the southwest region of North Dakota, the Badlands Activities Center was designed to accommodate three home teams, Dickinson State University, Dickinson High School, and Trinity High School — and to host a variety of community events. The BAC offers 5,500 square feet of multipurpose space and outdoor space for a variety of DSU and community events.
